Layton, Thelma, V., 86, of Elton, passed away on February 26, 2011 at Windber Medical Center. She was born on March 13, 1924 in Johnstown. Daughter of Earl J. and Nellie Bertha (Miller) Helsel. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a grandson, Robert William Layton. Survived by loving husband of 63 years, William M. Layton Sr., Elton; children, Carol J. wife of John Zabrosky, Haymarket, VA, William M. Layton Jr., Johnstown, James A. married to the former Claudia Haddon, Washington, PA, Sandra E. Layton, Elton/ Harrisburg and Gary W. and his fiancé, Brenda Leverknight, Johnstown; grandchildren, James A. II, Shannon Earle Layton both of Washington, PA, Kelly Layton and friend, Troy Bracken, Johnstown, Penny wife of George Mickolick, Dunlo, Mara Bullock and her fiancé, John Lawrence, San Diego, CA, Laura Zabrosky, Leesburg, VA, Johanna Zabrosky and her fiancé, Jeff Green, Linden, VA, Emily Layton, Johnstown and step grandson, Thomas Haddon married to the former Jennice Price, Sidman; great grandchildren, Kodey and Kaleb Mickolick, Wyatt Layton, and Evelyn Green and numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma was a graduate of Richland High School and received her Associates Degree in Business at Cambria-Rowe Business College. She retired from the former GEE BEE Department Store, where she was employed as a clerk. Thelma was a life-long member of Dunmyer Lutheran Church and the church’s Lydia Circle. She was also a member of Solomon Run Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary; Cambria County Fireman’s Ladies Auxiliary; Richland American Legion Ladies Auxiliary; Charter member of the Greater Johnstown Saddle Club. Thelma was a former leader of the Elton 4-H Flower Club. She and her family have shown horses for over 50 years at the Cambria County Fair. Thelma also enjoyed entering her flowers, vegetables, canned and baked goods at the fair. Friends received from 3-8 P.M. Monday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland and from 9:30 A.M. until time of service at 11 A.M. on Tuesday at Dunmyer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Nila Cogan officiating. Interment will be at Dunmyer Cemetery. The Family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to Dunmyer Lutheran Church, 547 School House Road, Johnstown, PA 15904 in memory of Thelma.
