Buchan – Nicholas Sr., “Nick”, 86, East Taylor Township, went to be with the Lord on February 23, 2014 at Golden Living Center. Born on September 14, 1927 in Franklin Borough, son of Milo and Marica (Griak) Buchan. Preceded in death by parents; son, Christopher Michael; siblings, Milan, George, Helen, Walter, Betty Gjurich, and Frank, and sister-in-law, Alice Buchan. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Y. (Good) Buchan, East Taylor Township; children, Marlene Buchan, Nicholas Jr., married to the former Sally E. Callen, and Cheryl, wife of James Vautar, all of East Taylor Township; grandchildren, James, Nicole, wife of Jerry Levis, Marissa, wife of Chris Brainard, and Stephanie, wife of Will Urban, all of East Taylor Township, Rachelle and her fiancée, Nikolas Brown and Leah, all of Pittsburgh; great grandchildren, Tyler Levis, South Fork, Issac Levis, Gage Urban, Blake Levis, Peyton Urban, Olivia Brainard, Luke Levis, Mason Brainard, and Nolan Brainard, all of East Taylor Township; sisters-in-law, Rose Buchan, Pittsburgh, and Yolanda Buchan, East Taylor Township; brother-in-law, Petty Gjurich, East Taylor Township and numerous nieces and nephews. Nick was a WW II Veteran serving in the US Navy. He retired after 35 years of service from Bethlehem Steel, Gautier Division, where he was employed as a crane operator. Nick was a member of various softball leagues for several years. He was a member of Conemaugh Church of the Brethren and their Softball Church League. Nick was also a member of the East Taylor Volunteer Fire Company, where he served as Fire Chief and taught fire school with his 2 good friends, Bob Schreyer and Dave Barker, for many years in both Somerset and Cambria County. He also served as Constable for East Taylor Township. During the Johnstown Flood he served as Civil Defense Director for East Taylor Township. He was always helping others and will be remembered as the local handyman. Nick enjoyed hunting with his son, grandson, great grandsons and his beloved dog, Buck. He loved spending time with his entire family and especially loved boating, fishing and camping at Raystown Lake with his wife, brother and sister-in-law. Friends will be received from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Baker-Harris Funeral Chapel, Conemaugh, and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Friday at Conemaugh Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Butch Derr officiating. Local fire companies will conduct a service at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family suggests contributions be directed to East Taylor Volunteer Fire Company, 403 Donruth Lane, Johnstown, PA 15909 in memory of Nick.
