Nellie M. Smith

Smith, Nellie M., 97, of Geistown. Died Jan. 28, 2017, at Allegheny Lutheran Home. Born May 15, 1919, in Dean, Cambria County. Daughter of the late Peter and Rose Fontanella. Also preceded in death by husband, Joseph A. Smith, Sr.; daughter, Kathleen Cronan; and siblings, Edna, Inez, John, Mary Cesca, Leo, Mark and Albert. Survived by daughter Susan, wife of Douglas Bastaja; and sons, Roger J., married to Heidi (Tenk), and Joseph A. Jr., married to Michelle (Kresak); grandchildren, Caroline (Doug), Tom (Nan), Christine (Chris), Susan (Allan), Diana (Paul) and Joseph. Adler, Devon, Jessica (John), Jennifer (Ryan), and Joseph III., Lori (George), and Mark (Kristen); great grandchildren, Aeron, Tim, Adam, Jacob, Alex, AnnMarie, Douglas, Michael, Joseph, Noah and Abby. Also numerous nieces and nephews. Member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Geistown. Nellie was Judge of Elections in Geistown for many years. She enjoyed her pinochle club, bowling, and line dancing. Nellie was a seamstress, painter in various mediums, doll maker, ceramic potter, gardener, knitter and general home handy person. She greatly enjoyed volunteering to help others and spending time with family and friends. Friends received 11:30 AM  to 12:30 PM Saturday Feb. 4, 2017, at Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland. Funeral Mass to follow at 1 PM Saturday at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Fr. David S. Peles, pastor. Committal at Richland Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff at Allegheny Lutheran Home, Conemaugh Regional Hospice and Dr. Balkissoon Maharajh.
