Nancy A. Turner

TURNER – Nancy Ann (Skrodinsky), 84, East Conemaugh Borough, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2025 at Windber Hospice. Born on July 3, 1940, in Johnstown, PA, she was the daughter of John and Virginia Skrodinsky. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William J. Turner, Sr., her parents, and her younger brother, Russell K. Skrodinsky. At just eight years old, following the passing of her father in 1948, Nancy took on the extraordinary responsibility of helping to raise her two younger brothers, John and Ronald. This early role as a caregiver shaped the woman she became—devoted, selfless, and strong. That devotion carried into motherhood as she lovingly raised her three children, William Jr., Barbara, and Michael. In time, she became “Gram” to eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, mother-in-law to her two daughters-in-law, Paula and Bonnie Turner as well as a cherished aunt to several nieces and nephews. Nancy’s lifelong dedication to caring for others extended beyond her family and into her career. She worked at Ebensburg State Center, where she retired as a supervisor in 1993, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and service. A woman of deep faith, Nancy was proud to have been baptized at Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church and later served for many years as both a lector and Eucharistic minister at the Church of the Transfiguration (formerly Sacred Heart) in East Conemaugh Borough. During Lent, she could always be found serving take-out dinners at the fish fries, and if you were lucky enough to be on her list, you undoubtedly received a call over the years requesting cakes for the church dinners. To those who knew her best, Nancy will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her insatiable thirst for knowledge, and her candid, yet loving advice. She never forgot a birthday, always making sure her children and grandchildren got a card and had their favorite homemade cake to celebrate. She will be fondly recalled for sharing “lemonades” on the porch, her knack for answering Jeopardy! clues—though she humbly referred to it as a "retention of useless knowledge"—and her boundless pride in her family. Whether cheering on her beloved Penn State Nittany Lions or sitting in the stands at her grandchildren’s games, she was always their loudest and most devoted fan. Though no words can fully capture the depth of love and admiration we hold for our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at the Church of the Transfiguration, with Fr. Timothy Harris T.O.R. Committal will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Windber Hospice, 600 Somerset Ave., Windber, PA 15963, or to a charity of one’s choice in Nancy’s memory. The family is being served by Baker Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services, 229-231 First St., Conemaugh. Cremation by Laurel Highlands Crematory at Harris Funeral Home. Online condolences may be posted at www.wharrisfuneralhome.com.
