Barefoot, Marietta M., 93, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt and devout Christian passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016, at Arbutus Park Manor in Johnstown, PA. Marietta was born in Piqua, Ohio and grew up in Long Beach, California. Her father was Ralph Kenton Wines and her mother was Sarah Margaret Johnston Wines. She was the younger sister of the late R. Kenton Wines whom she adored. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Long Beach Junior College. She met the love of her life, her husband of 56 years Landis E. Barefoot, in Sacramento, California during World War II. She worked at McClelland Air Field where he was an instructor. On their first date, he accompanied her to church where she sang in the choir. She was a talented soprano, singing in church choirs for more than 50 years. After the war, she chronicled their touching and funny adventures in a book titled “We’re on our Way!” as they traveled from the West Coast to Irwin, Pennsylvania. Once in Pennsylvania, they settled into a happy and rewarding life where they raised three children: Geoffrey (married to Joy, Naples, FL), Kimberley (married to John Oliver, Bournemouth, England) and Beth (married to Bruce Fisher, Morristown, NJ). She was an active member of Circleville United Methodist Church where she sang, taught Sunday School and headed the Methodist Women. She went back to school in 1963 earning an LPN degree, practiced nursing for 2 years and then worked for the Social Security Administration for 16 years. She and her husband were known for their generosity and loved to share their home with family, friends and neighbors. Aptly named “Happy Acres,” their home was host to countless community games and activities. Besides her husband, Landis, who preceded her in death in 2001, and children, Marietta cherished her grandchildren, Kelly Harris (married to John) and Melissa Honeycutt (married to David), Mark Oliver (married to Anna) and Kate Oliver. She also treasured having 8 great-grandchildren – Maxwell, Griffin, Wyatt and Aubrey Harris; Forrest and Madelyn Honeycutt; Bethany and Sophie Oliver. She also dearly loved her nephews, their children and grandchildren. Marietta was a woman who loved God and her family more than anything, though her affection and devotion to her friends came close. A member of the Arbutus Park retirement community for nearly 20 years, she enjoyed travel, reading, puzzles, card games, art classes, embroidery, Bible Study and even led an exercise class in her 90s. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Entombment will be on Tuesday, April 5 at 10 am at Richland Cemetery Mausoleum. There will be a memorial service for family and friends at 2 pm that same day at Arbutus Park Manor Chapel, 207 Ottawa St. Johnstown, PA. Family suggests contributions may be sent to Circleville United Methodist Church, 11600 Parkway Dr., Irwin, PA 15642 or Arbutus Park Manor, 207 Ottawa St., Johnstown, PA 15904.
