Ross, John W., 90, Geistown. Died August 22, 2013, at the Regional Hospice at Windber. Born April 14, 1923, in Geistown. Son of the late Floyd A. and Lovice E. (Griffith) Ross. Also preceded in death by sister, Anna Hoy. Survived by wife of 59 years, Ida Mary (Erickson) and these children; Vicky (Paul) Carter, Atlanta, GA; John W. (Grace Utzman), Sullivan, IN; Richard L. (Judith Hettle), Johnstown; James L. (Rebecca Giles), Summerhill; and William J., New York City. Grandchildren; Patrick, Rachel, Emily, Jennifer, Kristen, Matthew, Katie, Kevin, and Megan. Also 1 great grandson, Britton. Army Veteran of WWII. Still active Owner/Operator of Ross Turkey Farm, a business founded in 1936 by his father. Member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Windber American Legion, Post 137 and Life member of VFW Post# 14000. John was an avid gardener, gifting his friends and neighbors with homemade jelly and homegrown tomatoes. He was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and enjoyed hunting and fishing when he could get away from the farm. John was a family man who was always willing to help his children and grandchildren with projects. Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland, and from 10 AM to time of service at 11 AM Monday at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.
