John S. Fabo

Fabo – John S., 73, of South Fork, PA, where he was proprietor of Fabo’s service station, peacefully passed away on October 13, 2017 at Cambria Care Center. Born at midnight on May 1st, so he has two birth certificates (May 1 and May 2) 1944 to Joseph L. and Margaret M. (Fiffick) Fabo, at home in South Fork, PA. Preceded in death by parents and brothers, Joseph, Raymond, James and Larry. Last surviving member of the family. Survived by many cousins and nephews. John attended South Fork High School and graduated from the first class of Triangle Area High School. He joined the Army National Guard in 1975 and trained at Ft Knox and Ft Jackson before attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant with Headquarters Company. John joined the South Fork Volunteer Fire Company and helped build the current building, housing the fire department. He was a lifetime member of Station 85 and served as a trustee, secretary, president and assistant chief. John also taught one year at the Cambria County Fire School as an assistant instructor in flammable liquids. He was also a part-time police officer in the boroughs of Summerhill, Ehrenfeld, South Fork and Geistown Police Departments. John was a charter member of the Mainline Police Association. He also served as a charter member of the Forest Hills Ambulance Association as well as a period with the board of the Forest Hills Municipal Authority. John enjoyed competition archery, bowling and target shooting. He was an avid motorcyclist having crossed the United States twice, solo. John also did the 1000 Mile Iron Butt Run and was a member of the Johnstown Touring Club. He helped organize the “Doc’s Run” and the “Kids Crusades” to the Hershey Medical Center for ten years, as a member of the “Blue Knights” Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club. John enjoyed a good-spirited political debate and followed politics closely. He was a Roman Catholic and a 4th degree Knights of Columbus and served on the “Masters Staff.” John was a lector at Most Holy Trinity and the Immaculate Conception Churches. He ran the family business with his parents since 1956 until their passing in 1986. John enjoyed working hard, studying the history of South Fork and placing signs on his reader board – that became a town landmark. At John’s request, there will be no public viewing or service. Inurnment will be at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA. The family is being served by the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland.
