Gartrell – George D., 66, of Johnstown, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2023, at Villa Crest. He was born on July 12, 1956, in Johnstown, the son of George R. and Shirley A. (Reed) Gartrell, both of Johnstown. George was preceded in death by his beloved sister and best friend, Sandra, as well as his maternal grandparents, Henry and Elizabeth Reed, paternal grandparents, Edward and Anna Gartrell, and his favorite aunt, Ruth, and uncle Joe Laco. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In addition to his loving parents, George is survived by his nephew, Ryan (Shelby) Gartrell of Pittsburgh, whom he was immensely proud of and always had on his mind. Brother-in-law John Pudliner, nephews, John III and Wesley Pudliner, both of Pittsburgh, as well as great-nephews, Reed and Logan Gartrell. George had many aunts, uncles, and cousins, including his cousin, Jeff Laco, who he was buddies with since birth. He also had many friends, including Jane and Deb, who were especially dear to him.
George was a 1974 graduate of Conemaugh Valley High School, where he was an accomplished wrestler. He took great pride in his wrestling career and held it dear to his heart. George was an avid Steelers fan and never missed a game. He had a love for animals and was a devoted dog owner throughout his lifetime. George was employed at Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown, Steelton, and Sparrows Point, MD for over 30 years. After moving back to Johnstown, he worked for Renzenberger Trucking Co. hauling train conductors.
George's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Windber Hospice Home Health, especially Jenn, and Villa Crest for their love and compassion in caring for their son, Georgie.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Baker-Harris Funeral Chapel, 229-231 First Street, Conemaugh, with the Rev. Michael Van Dyke officiating.
