Esther L. Smatlak

Smatlak – Esther L., 87, Johnstown, went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center. Born on January 5, 1930 in Windber, daughter of Edward R. Sr. and Edna C. (Hoffman) Walker. Preceded in death by her parents; husband of 51 years, Michael, and brother, Edward R. Jr. She is survived by her loving children, David Michael, Irwin, PA, Sally, wife of Michael Sandherr, Heber, UT, Kevin Michael, Dublin, OH, and Michele L., wife of Bert Axelson, Irwin, PA; grandchildren, Matthew (Kimberly) Sandherr, Naples, FL, Sarah (Garrett) Rigard, Salt Lake City, UT, and Abbey and Annika Axelson, Irwin, PA; great granddaughters, Grace Sandherr and Lydia Rigard; siblings, Elizabeth Vespa, Thomas (Alice), Carolyn (William) Green, and Melvin (Michelle) and numerous nieces and nephews. Esther was a graduate of Windber High School. She was an Admission Clerk at the former Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, and later retired from Sears as a Sales Clerk. Esther was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, where she was the pianist for many years. She was also a member of the Key Club. Esther enjoyed knitting, gardening, candy making, canning vegetables from her garden, and the Christmas Holiday Season. She loved socializing with her church and family. Esther will be remembered for her outgoing personality and sense of humor. Friends will be received from 3-7 p.m. on Sunday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, with the Rev. Terry W. Brown officiating. Interment will be at Richland Cemetery. The family suggests contributions be directed to Arbutus Park Manor, 207 Ottawa Street, Johnstown, PA 15904 in memory of Esther.
