Dorothy E. Berkebile

Berkebile – Dorothy E., 97, Richland Township, went to be with her Lord on March 30, 2015 at Windber Hospital. Born on November 15, 1917 in Windber, daughter of Foster and Nellie (Bell) Penrod. Preceded in death by her parents; husband of 66 years, Vernon J. Berkebile; newborn daughter, Bonnie Elaine; sisters, Jean Lynn, Pauline Caldwell, and Kathleen Robine and an infant brother, Foster; brothers-in-law, Don Berkebile, Robert Caldwell, Joseph Robine, and Frank Butler; sister-in-law, Gladys Hiner-Woods. She is survived by her loving children, Gail E., wife of James M. Leckey and Gary V., married to the former Diane L. Blough; grandchildren, Keith A. (Julie) Leckey, Dr. David G. (Nancy) Berkebile, Matthew J. (Leighann) Leckey, Heidi E. Lushko, and Jonathan R. “JR” (Karen) Leckey; 16 great grandchildren; sister, Frances Butler; brother, Norman “Bud” (Judy) Penrod; sisters-in-law, Mildred “Sis” Schrock-Luther, and Verda Berkebile and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a graduate of Richland Township High School. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, and the Christian Women’s Club. Dorothy enjoyed participating in home Bible studies. She also enjoyed her flowers, baking, making strawberry jam and canning. She will be remembered as a sweet lady who loved all of God’s creation and welcoming all into her home. Her family has many wonderful memories of good times together. Psalm 116:15 “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until time of Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. David A. Streets officiating. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The family is being served by the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland. The family suggests contributions be directed to Johnstown Christian School, 125 Christian School Rd, Hollsopple, PA 15935 in memory of Dorothy.
