Kaufman, David, 77, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Johnstown, passed away on April 7, 2012 at Mercy Hospital. He was born on June 8, 1934 in Johnstown. Son of Harold J. âPeteâ and Margaret A. âBillyâ (Baines) Kaufman. Preceded in death by parents; brother, William âPudgeâ Kaufman and a brother-in-law, Edward G. Riek. He is survived by his loving children, Cari G. Kaufman, Berkeley, CA and Sean D. Kaufman, Pittsburgh, PA; sister Joan K. Riek, Johnstown and numerous nieces and nephews. David was a 1952 graduate of Richland High School. He received his Bachelors Degree in English Literature and a Masters Degree in Old English from the University of Pittsburgh. David then earned another Masters Degree in Library Science from Carnegie Institute of Technology. He was employed at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and later retired from Indiana University of PA in 1997, where he was employed as a Librarian. David published numerous short stories in magazines and anthologies. He also self published 3 books, including: âBeowulf: A Modern English Translation,â âAnother Saturday to Killâ and âThe Fourth Gorgon.â When David was in high school and college, he performed as an amateur magician under the name Redstone, and later in life he delighted children with illusions. He enjoyed music, especially classical music, and talking to people from around the world on his HAM radio. David was a world traveler. He will be remembered as a reserved person who at heart was a hopeless romantic. At Davidâs request there will be no public viewing. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at Kaufman Cemetery, Davidsville. The family is being served by the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland. The family suggests contributions be directed to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 4400 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 in memory of David.
