Alonzo J. "Al" Johnson Jr.

November 8, 1934 — February 7, 2022

JOHNSON---Alonzo J. Jr. “Al,” 87, of Johnstown PA, went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2022 at Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown PA.  He is preceded in death by his wife and the love of his life, our mom, Margaretta B. (Stinson) Johnson.  His passing ends a marriage union of 65 years.   He is also preceded by parents, Doris (Lehman) Johnson and Alonzo Johnson Sr.  Also preceded by sisters, Dephane Baer, Sarah Berkebile and Doris Griffith-Contrillo.  He is survived by sister, Lila Weese of Homestead PA.  Also survived by these children: Alan Johnson and wife, Melissa, Johnstown PA, Lucinda (Johnson) Williams and husband, Richard Nowak Jonesport ME, Lori (Johnson) Ditto and husband Brian, Reisterstown MD, Ryan Johnson and wife Lauren Blue Bell PA.  He leaves behind nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  Alonzo, he preferred Al, was a 1952 graduate of Greater Johnstown Central High School.  He was employed at Bethlehem Steel for almost 40 years working in the Lower Works, the Gautier Works and, for most of his career, at the Franklin Mills where he was a turn provider in the Production Scheduling Department. In the 1980s he was promoted to Supervisor in Production Scheduling and he was always very proud of his ‘white hat’ and his time as part of the Johnstown Works.  Even after Bethlehem Steel closed, he remained and worked for Veritas and Bar Rod and Wire.  He was also a proud life time member of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Company, Station 6, serving Oakland and all of Stonycreek Township in various fire company offices including Assistant Chief and later on as EMS Director.  Dad was also a proud member of the East Hills Kiwanis for many years where he helped develop and then spent many a morning and evening putting up and taking down the Flags over East Hills. He was a proud Republican Committeeman for Stonycreek Township for many years and was party chairman there from 1978 until 1982. But his most important work was being our dad and ‘pap pap’ to so many children in his immediate and extended family.  He will be missed beyond our ability to express it in words.  We love you dad. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland, where Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with Rev. David Bunnell officiating. Interment, Richland Cemetery. Special thanks to the nursing staff at the Emergency Department, 8th Rose and at the Conemaugh Hospice for the loving care they showed our father. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Maryland Food Bank at www.mdfoodbank.org\donate or to New Hampshire Music Festival, www.nhmf.org, at P.O. Box 64, Plymouth, NH 03264 in memory of Alonzo J. “Al” Johnson Jr.
